Origin of Afternoon Tea
In the early 1840's afternoon tea was introduced in Britain by Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford.
Late one afternoon she became hungry and asked for a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake to her room.
This became a regular occurrence and she began inviting her friends to join her.
This grew into a fashionable social event which is still popular today for celebrations and social gatherings.
Afternoon tea has developed into a mini meal consisting of tea, small finger sandwiches, scones and cakes.
